Ayurveda Why or Why not?
Ayurveda
Why or Why not?
A lot has been written on Ayurveda and it has definitely
become one of the most talked about and discussed topic in recent past. We all
know what Ayurveda is, what are the three doshas of our body, about tremendous
benefits Ayurveda offers and a lot more but; yes but! The confusion still
persists; is it good or bad? Will it benefit or not? Etc. etc.
Ayurveda the “science of longevity” from ancient India dates
back to more than 5000 years and find its mention in the Vedas as well. It was
the only science of medication and treatment available when the science of
allopathy and homeopathy was not
discovered.
Ayurveda over Allopathic
Ayurveda works at finding the root of the illness and then
finally eradicating it whereas allopathic is believe to provide instant relief
from the illness. Ayurvedic treatment
primarily contains different combinations of natural ingredients such as fresh
fruits, veggies, herbs and spices which help in healing without causing any
side-effects to the body. The science of ayurvedic treatment not merely
believes on healing, it also emphasizes on a healthy and balanced life and be
as close to nature as possible.
Ayurveda for Skin
Ayurveda is fast becoming the people’s first and foremost
choice for skin care across most of the countries. Leaders of the hospitality
industry have started focusing their promotion strategies on the ayurvedic spas and massage options available. They are trying to lure customers into the aura
of natural surroundings and offer them natural treatments to rejuvenate and de-stress
from their routine lives. The experts in the field although cautions against a
casual approach towards ayurvedic treatment for skin. An herb can have
powerful healing properties, but used alone or in inappropriate combinations,
sometimes it does more harm than good.
One should be well aware of his/her skin type before kick
starting the ayurvedic treatment. For example people with dry and thin skin(Vata
dosha) can include some essential oils and herbs in combination which can
nourish and hydrate the skin. Such peoples should also include organic milk,
whole grains and green leafy vegetables in their diet.
People with sensitive
skin which is more prone to freckles and moles(Pitta dosha) should stay
away from harsh synthetic cosmetics. They should use natural cooling herbs and
other resistance increasing skin care products. Natural cooling material such
as products made from cedar sandalwood, lemongrass can be of immense help. Such
people should also avoid hot and spicy foods and take lots of juicy fruits and
cool milk.
People with excessive
oily and thick skin(Kapha dosha) are more prone to accumulate toxins
under the skin. Such people need both internal and external detoxification on a
regular basis to eradicate toxins from the skin. Scrubbing the skin gently with
exfoliating clay such as fuller earth clay or bentonite clay can help external
cleansing. For internal cleansing one should focus more on a healthy diet. The diet should ideally include more organic
vegetables, fruits and salad(taken half an hour before meals)
Word of caution
Ayurevda being the traditional healing system has a complex
philosophy, it is primarily based on balance in one’s system. It emphasizes
that for a healthy living one has to maintain balance in every aspect of life
be it work, rest, play, exercise or food. Having attributed that one can say,
that anything which encourages balance in life is likely to lead to quality and
wellness in life but Ayurevda still has its advantages, in our modern life
styles anything which promises a healing therapy without any side effects and
overall improvement of our body by completely eradicating the problem causing
germs, is certainly worth a try.
