Neem- India’s local dispensary
Neem an important constituent for most of the ayurvedic
products is known to possess immense health promoting properties since ages.
Known to be one of the most versatile plants, neem is a fast growing, evergreen
tree having strong soil binding capability. Neem is one of those rare trees of
which every part is known to possess therapeutic value, because of which
villagers in India consider it as their home dispensary.
Properties of Neem
Neem has a bitter taste but has a powerful cooling energy.
Neem also acts as a blood purifier thus leading to healthy blood. This
refrigerating property along with a strong support for healthy blood helps to
control the heat element of the body (Pitta dosh). Neem is also dry and
light in nature thus inducing faster metabolism, and a healthy liver. The bitterness of neem also improves taste
which forms the core of healthy digestion.
Benefits of Neem
Blood purification and temperature controlling quality of
neem radiates the skin from within. It reduces excessive body heat which may
otherwise lead to skin blemishes and acne on skin. As an external application neem oil or soap
helps soothe and lubricate the skin.
Blood Sugar levels
Faster metabolism and
purified blood helps keep the body’s blood sugar levels under control if they
are already in the normal range.
Hair
For
those with excess body temperatures and heat trapped in the scalp and hair
follicles, neem is terrific for cooling the scalp and supporting the growth of
lustrous, smooth hair.
Neem
twigs have been used for long by villagers. Neem is highly effective in maintaining
strong gums and healthy teeth, in fact it very efficiently takes care of the
overall oral hygiene.
In
very general terms neem is known to have a strong impact on reproductive
system, circulatory system, the digestive system and the respiratory system.
Thus if taken properly it leads to a healthy body with a strong immunity, which
is also externally reflected with radiant skin and strong and white teeth.
How to use?
While
neem has loads of benefits it has its share of caution too. The cold, light and
dry nature of neem tends to aggravate flow of gas (aggravated vata in body)
in our body which may sometimes cause anxiety or nervousness. If consumed in
high quantities it may also sometimes lead to aggravated digestive problems and
increased restlessness. It is therefore recommended that neem is taken in
combination with other herbs that helps subdue its probable side effects.
Bottomline
Neem
has high therapeutic value and is still the local dispensary for most of the
Indian villagers with high positive effects.
